The event was organized by the "Edunauten" which is a relatively new network to support mobile learning by providing links to appropriate tools, a map with concrete offers, organizations and renting options. The three days were organized in a barcamp style and offered lots of time for the exchange of thoughts and tools. On the second day several interested convention participants used the chance to try out the TidyCity authoring tools in order to built an example mission for the surrounding area. The participants that mostly had a pedagogical background were impressed how easy-to-use the tools were. On the third day the TOTEM.Designer and TOTEM.Scout were presented as more powerful tools for advanced users.

Trackback URL for this post:

http://totem-project.fit.fraunhofer.de/?q=trackback/170

http://totem-project.fit.fraunhofer.de/?q=node/170#comments Mon, 08 Oct 2012 10:53:46 +0000 Lisa.Blum 170 at http://totem-project.fit.fraunhofer.de TOTEM Summer School Mobile Mixed Reality Game Jam Hackathon 2012 http://totem-project.fit.fraunhofer.de/?q=node/152
From 23th to 27th July the TOTEM Summer School Mobile Mixed Reality Game Jam Hackathon 2012 took place at Schloss Birlinghoven near Bonn in Germany. 16 students from all over the world learned about mobile game development and created their own mobile games with the help of the TOTEM tools. The Girlsday is a popular event in Germany that allows school girls to have a look at professions that are typically persued by men as it is often the case e.g. in the computer science sector. The event shall bolster girls with interest in these topics to further investigate them and might ultimately help with the career choice of the girls.

Today we offered two workshops for playing TidyCity on our campus. In total 17 girls between 13 and 17 participated and played in groups of two or three girls. This year's topic was "Art and Culture of digital Games". 500 participants used the chance for creative exchange, visited talks or learned new things in workshops. We performed two workshops, one on each day of the conference. In the workshops the participants were able to discover the fascinating graffiti art in the surrounding area of the conference location ( the AbenteuerHallenKALK in Cologne) with a previously created TidyCity mission. Afterwards they were shown how to create their own TidyCity mission and were astonished how easy it is to contribute your own content.

Left photo: Introduction to TidyCity; Right photo: Playing TidyCity at Next Level Conference

Trackback URL for this post:

http://totem-project.fit.fraunhofer.de/?q=trackback/138

http://totem-project.fit.fraunhofer.de/?q=node/138#comments Game conference Next Level Conference 2011 tidy city Mon, 14 Nov 2011 08:46:52 +0000 Lisa.Blum 138 at http://totem-project.fit.fraunhofer.de Tidy City in New Zealand http://totem-project.fit.fraunhofer.de/?q=node/126
Recently Melanie Middlemiss and her collegues at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand were host to a group of high school students taking part in the OUASSA camp (http://ouassa.otago.ac.nz). During their stay the students took part in a number of activities to get a feel for what Information Science is all about, and to experience some of the cool technologies that their students are working with. As such, Melanie Middlemiss and her collegues showed them a number of mobile augmented reality and mixed reality games – one of which was TidyCity:

"We set up two challenges for the students – Albany Street Challenge, and Campus Challenge. The first was a simple game that contained 5 riddles that were situated along Albany Street in the Otago University campus. The idea of this challenge was for the students to get the feel for the software and devices that they were using. We thought that they might have had some issues and needed a while to come to grips with the technology, but they raced off in small groups and had the challenge completed in no time!

The second challenge was designed to test the students’ knowledge of the University of Otago campus. These students had only spent a few days on campus earlier in the year, so they were not particularly familiar with the area. This challenge gave them a chance to wander around campus and find some locations that they may not have otherwise visited. The groups had a great time with this challenge and solved nearly all of the riddles – unfortunately we were a little constrained on time by this stage.

The students all reported back that they had a great time using the TidyCity application and completing the challenges that we had set out. They felt that it was a fun and novel way to become familiar with a new location. As far as the Department of Information Science staff are concerned, it was nice and easy to set up the challenges using the TidyCity Scout application on the mobile device, and we hope to use the application again when we have visiting students on campus."

Students puzzling about a TidyCity riddle. A specific Tidy City mission for the area around the festival location near HAU 2 (subway station "Hallesches Tor") was provided by game designer Michael Straeubig. Several players used the chance to solve the tricky riddles of his mission and learnt more about the area while having a good time. In addition to playing the game we also offered a workshop in which visitors could learn more about how to author their own Tidy City mission with our easy-to-use authoring tools that can downloaded for free.

Beside the festival, we used the chance and developed a huge Tidy City mission for Berlin which covers many intersting spots in Berlin. The Girlsday is an event that allows girls to have a look at professions that are typically persued by men as it is often the case e.g. in engineering, computer science or handcraft. The event shall bolster girls with interest in these topics to further investigate them and might ultimately help with the career choice of the girls.
On the Girlsday twelve girls (six per workshop) had the chance to play TidyCity on the Fraunhofer IZB campus in Sankt Augustin. The game mission was generated by our 15-year old school intern Chantal who recently used our authoring tool series to produce her own interesting and challenging mission of the campus area. During great weather conditions the girls played her mission and had fun. They solved many of Chantal’s riddles and were very busy walking around the campus area to find the wanted places. Afterwards they could check out our authoring tools themselves. They scouted out the campus area and took pictures of their own riddles with the Scout Tool. Then, they uploaded the collected data to the TidyCity Web Authoring Tool and created their own little mission.

These girls just solved a riddle.

<img width="600" height="400" alt="Where can this place be?
